Cosmetic Medicine - First Do No Harm

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

Most of us would like to tweak our face or body to some extent, but what happens when someone loses sight of what constitutes a ‘healthy’ approach to cosmetic medicine?

Ethical conduct in the cosmetic medicine industry is vitally important when trying to help patients look and feel their best. I’m only too aware of the mental health issues presenting themselves in all cross-sections of our community so while I’m passionate about helping people look and feel their best, I’m also happy to deny a cosmetic treatment to someone who I feel has unreasonable expectations of what it will change in their life.

As a boost to our self-esteem, cosmetic procedures can really achieve great things, but if someone is tending to think these procedures will fix what are essentially more profound psychological issues, then I’d caution against starting on a journey of continuous cosmetic tweaks.

For those with healthy expectations, procedures that improve the complexion, reduce wrinkles and restore a more youthful appearance are great for improving self-image and helping to be the best version of ourselves. But we’ve all seen the results for those who’ve gone too far and whose altered visage bears no resemblance to their original selves.

Its vitally important to be honest with patients not only about what treatments I believe will help to achieve the results they’re achieving, but to also be truthful when a patient is looking to go into territory that will have them looking ‘overdone’, or unnatural.

While others will happily give the client everything they ask for, I make no apologies for my more subtle approach to achieving aesthetic goals. I’m absolutely prepared to send someone away with half the filler they were originally asking for if I think it’s necessary, so we can then assess the results in a few weeks and determine if they truly need to go further.

This ‘softly-softly’, collaborative approach can achieve fantastic outcomes where the patient hasn’t needed to change their appearance excessively to still achieve outstanding results.
